ClearPath Diagnostics provides highly specialized gynecologic pathology services to referring clinicians. Our gynecologic section offers in depth expertise in the interpretation of Pap tests and gynecologic tissue specimens. We have been at the forefront in providing new advances in diagnostic technology for the benefit of your patients.

We are an independent laboratory that focuses on outreach anatomical pathology services. We offer highly accurate diagnostics with rapid turn around of cases and personalized service. ClearPath prides itself on establishing excellent communication with all health care providers.

Tissue pathology

Our pathologists have extensive experience in the interpretation of gynecologic specimens. They are always on site and available to handle calls and questions.

Photographs to supplement the diagnostic report are available on selected reports or if requested. Our pathologists also actively participate in teaching and investigative studies in gynecologic fields.

· Endometrial biopsy interpretation
The pathologists at ClearPath Diagnostics have extensive experience in endometrial biopsy evaluation. We realize that patients are often anxious and concerned about these biopsies, and we strive to provide clear, rapid reports, usually within one working day of receipt. Our pathologists have been dedicated to careful interpretation of these specimens for many years, and it is an area of special expertise. We handle many biopsies, curettings and Tao Brush™ samples daily and stress rapid turnaround time with accurate and concise diagnoses. Our histologic evaluation begins with careful handling and preparation by skilled histotechnologists, with each specimen sectioned through multiple levels. Diagnoses use standard terminology and avoid vague, non-specific terms. Unusual findings or urgent cases will receive personalized attention. Furthermore, our pathologists are available by phone when a provider has questions regarding a case.

· Cervical biopsy interpretation
Cervical biopsy interpretation is a specialty at ClearPath Diagnostics. Our pathologists have many years experience in the evaluation of cervical tissues for dysplasia, neoplasia and inflammation. All specimens receive careful handling to insure no loss of tissue. Tissue is carefully oriented during processing, precisely sectioned and expertly stained, assisting the pathologists in precisely diagnosing every abnormality. Small or scant specimens receive special handling to concentrate the available tissue and allow for full evaluation of all material submitted to ClearPath. Standardized terminology for dysplasias and cervical intraepithelial neoplasia are incorporated in all positive diagnoses. Immunohistochemistry is judiciously used to help evaluate subtle changes in difficult cases. Cervical cone and LEEP specimens receive similar careful analysis. When appropriate, on site Pap smears are reviewed and correlated with the biopsy material. ClearPath also offers evaluation of cervical specimen taken by brush technique such as SpiraBrush CX®. Again, careful handling to the specimen with full retrieval of tissues allows for accurate diagnoses in most cases.

· Vulvar biopsy evaluation
The pathologists at ClearPath Diagnostics have extensive experience in the evaluation of vulvar specimens. Inflammatory changes as well as neoplastic diseases are frequently seen at our practice. The senior pathologists have extensive expertise in the interpretation of malignant and benign vulvar tumors. We use current and standardized terminology in reporting malignant diseases. Our extended experience with inflammatory diseases of the vulvar allow for precise classification of most biopsies to help guide clinical decisions. Our on-site dermatopathologist provides further strength in the interpretation of these specimens. Immunohistochemisty, in situ hybridization and direct immunofluorescence are available in our facility to assist in the diagnosis of difficult cases.

Our modern and innovative laboratory is the largest for cytology screening services in the region. We have a well-trained and experienced team of cytotechnologists that complement our pathologists, providing maximum skill in Pap test evaluation.

We were the first in upstate New York to introduce ThinPrep® monolayer technology to enhance the sensitivity and reliability of Pap screening. We were also the first in the region to implement image assisted, computerized pre-screening of all Pap tests which helps to ensure that no abnormal cells are overlooked.

HPV (Human papillomavirus) evaluation

In addition, we led the way in offering the Hologic Gen-Probe® APTIMA® HPV assay for Human papillomavirus (HPV) testing which targets E6/E7 mRNA to test for 14 high risk HPV types. Furthermore, the APTIMA HPV 16 18/45 genotype assay individually identifies and differentiates high risk types 16 and 18/45 which show higher carcinogenic potential relative to all other high risk HPV types. This test can be performed from the ThinPrep specimen vial, and is FDA approved. ThinPrep Pap specimens must be less than four weeks old. HPV testing can be done reflexively on all ThinPrep Pap samples. There must be sufficient quantity remaining after processing the pap test to perform the testing. Also, tissue specimens (paraffin embedded) can be tested for high and low risk HPV using in situ hybridization. Tissue specimens are stable indefinitely.

Neisseria gonorrhea, Chlamydia trachomatis and Trichomonas vaginalis testing from ThinPrep vial

ClearPath offers Neisseria gonorrhoeae and Chlamydia trachomatis testing using the highly sensitive Hologic Gen-Probe® APTIMA Combo 2® Assay and Trichomonas vaginalis testing using the Hologic Gen-Probe APTIMA Trichomonas vaginalis Assay. These tests can be done using the ThinPrep liquid Pap specimen that is also sent for Pap and HPV analysis. This method allows us to provide up to 5 results (Pap, HPV, GC/Chlamydia and Trichomonas) from a single specimen, minimizing specimen handling for collection and transportation. To do these tests in conjunction with a ThinPrep Pap, they must be ordered along with the Pap. GC/Chlamydia and Trichomonas testing cannot be performed after the aliquot for the Pap test has been taken from the vial. Specimen collection and transport information for Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Chlamydia trachomatis and Trichomonas vaginalis testing can be found here. We provide the collection and transport material.

Vaginitis Testing

We offer triple testing for Candida species, Gardnerella vaginalis and Trichomonas vaginalis using Becton Dickinson AffirmTM, VPIII for these agents. This analysis requires a separate vaginal swab. We provide the special swabs and transport system. The tests that comprise the Affirm Panel cannot be ordered individually from this test.

Molecular Diagnostic-PCR Testing

We offer molecular diagnostic testing through an exclusive arrangement with Medical Diagnostic Laboratories. This advanced polymerase chain reaction (PCR) technique provides a highly sensitive and specific test for numerous pathogens. All tests can be performed from one specimen, collected with MDL's OneSwab®.

Group B Streptococcus Testing

ClearPath Diagnostics is the first in the region to offer the illumigene® test for Group B Streptococcus (GBS). This new assay is the next generation of technology for GBS testing, replacing the current culture methodology. This broth-enriched molecular assay provides a rapid report with higher sensitivity compared to culture. The test is ideally suited for testing in late pregnancy.
